- Project Title & Role:
Smart Prosthetic Cooling System (Founding R&D Engineer, RockyTech) - Problem Statement:
Amputee patients experience excessive heat and sweating inside prosthetic sockets, reducing comfort, usability, and mobility. Existing liners lacked active thermal regulation. - My Solution:
- Developed a compact flexible polymer based thermoelectric cooling module integrated into prosthetic sockets with proprietary heat transfer material.
- Designed flexible thermoelectric cells with custom heatsinks and compact 4-layer PCB.
- Conducted thermal/electrical characterization across multiple operating conditions.
- Collaborated with EEs to integrate signal routing and minimize EMI in a wearable system.
- Key Deliverables/Outcomes:
- Functional prototype achieved significant temperature reduction for amputee patients from 95°F to 72°F in 10 minutes with minimum heat spikes.
- Filed PCT patents (cooling system).
- ISO 13485–compliant design reviews (DFMEA, PFMEA).
- Enhanced manufacturability with reduced wiring bulk and improved socket integration.
- Visuals:
- Thermal image of cooling modules under load.
- CAD rendering of prosthetic socket with cooling system.
- Flexible PCB layout (confidential).
